The winner of the 2014 Association of Illustrators' Award for Children's Books, Shh! is the covetable new picture book from Chris Haughton, one of the most exciting new voices in children's literature. From Chris Haughton, the multi award-winning author-illustrator of A Bit Lost and Oh No, George!, comes a picture book about a beautiful bird, four friends and plans gone wrong... The friends are out for a walk. Suddenly, they spot it - a beautiful bird perched high in a tree! They simply must have it and - shh!- they have a plan. So they tip-toe very slowly, nets poised - "Ready one ... ready two ... ready three ... GO!" But, at the turn of the page, we find a ridiculous bunch of very tangled characters and a blissfully oblivious bird, flying away. One hilarious foiled plan after another and it's clear that this goofy gang cannot catch that elusive birdie! But the littlest of this group, a quiet spectator up until now, knows that a bit of kindness can go a long way... Will his friends follow his gentle lead or will they get themselves into even more trouble?

Possibly one of the best young toddler books ever. My son (age 2) has been in love with this book since about 18 months, and it is one of those rare treasures of a book that I don't get bored reading over and over (and over and over and over). My son knows all the words, and loves to act it out, even looking for birds outside as we walk to school. It is beautiful to look at--the artwork is so simple yet marvelous--it has funny moments and sweet ones, and it actually has a moral to the story that is valuable to adults *and* that my 2 year old can grasp. I have been buying this as a gift, along with the almost equally fabulous "Oh No, George!" for everyone I can think of with a child in the 1-3 age range.

Shh! We Have a Plan Chris Haughton 9781406360035 Books Reviews

A very simple book with few words. Upon receiving i was concerned since my 2 year old likes long story books. But to my surprise she LOVES this book and repeats the " stop" & "shhh!" parts. I also keep on finding her randomly flipping through this book reading it to her stuffed animals.
Love this book!!! few words but words that kids love to say and enjoy. Fun book for kids and adults. I have read this to my 22 month old granddaughter and she just wants to read it over and over, simple drawings, really get the children involved and who doesn't like a story where the youngest one is the smartest..
LOVE THIS BOOK will buy again for gifts!
We absolutely love this book! My 16 month old son started pointing out the bird (red when everything else is blueish) on his own. The book is repetitive enough that he can learn some words without being so repetitive that I get board. "Ready one, ready two, ready three, GO!" is his absolute favorite part and that works outside the book too (getting him to lie down for a diaper change, even). Also, the book is simple enough to act out. It's really very versatile.
I saw this book crammed in between books on the shelves of my local library, and jumped at it. I just recently corresponded with the author, but didn't get a chance to read it yet. I am so glad I did.

The illustrations were what caught my eye first. Chris Haughton earned the 2014 Association Illustrators Award for children's books with this title. The pictures bold colors, but simplistic nature, of the paper-cut characters are captivating. They leave a lot of imagination up to the reader. The four characters could be any gender, nationality, or age, and give room for any reader to connect to the story.

The simple plot is full of charm and humor. Four friends are out walking and find a beautiful bird, they must have. The larger three have a plan to catch it, but they fail time and time again. The littlest one doesn't follow the plan, but finds another way. Ultimately, things don't go according to plan, but the story comes full circle with a witty end.

This was an absolute delight to read, and now a copy adorns my very own bookshelf at home.
I borrowed this book from the library for my preschool class. I was able to read it on-on-one with a student who had difficulty attending during story time. She not only stayed with me throughout the entire book, she laughed and recognized when to say, "Shh! We Have a Plan!" She told her mom about the book when she came at the end of the day. I HAD to buy it for her and wrote on the inside describing her reaction. I sincerely hope she is able to share this with her own children some day.
I don't know what it is about Chris Haughton's books, but the three of them are my toddler's three favorite books. There's something about them, maybe the repetition, maybe the bold graphics, I have no idea, but he loves them so much. This book is now his new favorite. I also don't mind reading it 57 times a night, which is good, because that's pretty much what's happening. It's a very simple story, the pictures are interesting, and best of all, my kid gets really excited about reading this. This is really a great find.
We LOVE this book!

As a board book, I live that it is the full story. Nothing is edited out.

However, some of the pages are condensed so instead of having a full page spread of Sh! Shh!!! We have a plan! (Covering two pages.) It's that on the left and ready one, ready two.... On the right side. I was a little disappointed because it takes some of the magical suspense out but it's a lot of pages for a board book. And we still love it.
